Spring is upon us! As the cold of winter starts to fade into the rear-view and we can begin to shake off our hibernation attitudes, it can be a great time to make the most of the season’s change. I don’t know about you, but I’m certainly looking for every opportunity I can find to celebrate the arrival of warmer days, plants poking their heads above the frosty earth, and an invitation to focus on renewal. Watch out, spring, here I come!
So, what does spring showing up in full swing mean for us? What inspiration can we draw from it? For one, it can be a great opportunity to give yourself a fresh start on any problems that might be hovering over you. Give yourself permission to leave behind any residual anxieties that might have accumulated over the winter months, and tackle any challenges on your plate without having to drag all your built-up woes with you. “Spring cleaning” can be emotional just as much as it is physical! Of course, if it’s helpful or if your home could use it, there’s no harm in also using the longer, warmer days to bust out some de-cluttering and deep-cleaning skills. Either way, there’s not really a wrong way to do things – just do whatever feels like a productive, healing way to mark the passing of the seasons!
Try planting some seeds! Figure out what kind of plant management feels doable and fulfilling, and give yourself the project of helping a little green guy grow! Whether it’s something as ambitious as a flower arrangement or a hardy little spider plant, it’s the perfect time of the year to cultivate saplings of all kinds. If you have room for it, maybe even plant a tree, and make a commitment to tend to it over time? But don’t worry if that sounds daunting – as long as it helps you connect to a practice of intentional care; you’re doing it right.
Shake off that winter stiffness and get exploring! Maybe you can take a drive out to the country and enjoy some beautiful springtime vistas, or maybe you can just pay closer attention to the nature in your neighborhood as it resurfaces from winter sleep. I’ve been noticing the birds making their way back to bird feeders and trees starting to bud – even without leaving the city, it’s always beautiful to see the ways nature starts to unfold as winter slips away.
One tried-and-true method to welcome spring is to break out the broom, mop, and rubber gloves, and get to some good old-fashioned spring cleaning! Again, it’s easy for this to feel overwhelming, but there’s no need to get stressed about it. Set yourself manageable micro-goals, stick to a plan, and you’ll have your place spick-and-span in no time! Personally, I find there’s nothing like playing some upbeat music while I clean. What do you like to listen to while you scrub and sweep? Let us know your playlist inspo!
When March rolls around, it can be a good time to check back in with those New Year’s resolutions we made a few months ago. No need to stress about it – we all know that sometimes, keeping up with the plans we made in December isn’t easy as the year continues. As opposed to beating yourself up about it, take it as an opportunity to ask yourself what’s working, what’s not, and what changes could be helpful. If a resolution is really paying off, that’s great! Try to see what lessons you can take from your success to be able to replicate it in the future. And if you’re struggling with a resolution – that’s also okay! Ask yourself what obstacles are in your way that are making it hard to follow through. Sometimes it can simply be life getting in the way – I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how that’s happened over the past year. Sometimes we misjudge our capacities or where we should be putting our energy. Just be compassionate with yourself, understand that you’re doing your best, and you can use the energy of the spring equinox to leave behind anything holding you back, turn a new leaf, and put all your energy into the areas that benefit you most.
The spring equinox only comes once a year – so you might as well make an event out of it! Set aside the evening to center yourself and enjoy an evening of ritual and focus. Maybe try our ideas to make a DIY at-home spa experience from our last blog post? Write out a list of intentions to carry forward into spring? Meditate on what renewal means to you and how you want to practice it in your life? Take the idea of planting seeds from earlier, and really focus on it as a ritual process? You might also find some inspiration from your family’s rituals. However you spend your evening, just think about what you want to get out of the equinox and what energies you want to make central in your life.
Well, hopefully these thoughts can help you figure out a way to make the spring equinox special and meaningful for you. It’s always important to check in with your goals and set time aside for intentional reflection and ritual. Hopefully, the changing of the seasons can give you the excuse you need to take some “you” time! As always, feel free to get in touch and let us know if you have your own ways of commemorating the equinox that you want to share with the world, and be sure to follow our Instagram @nakkispa to get regular updates and inspiration on self-care and wellness!
